God =/= Santa

“But to these shepherds, God’s glorious immediacy offered no joy. They were terrified. We would have been too. And not merely because we are so small compared with God and so drab compared with his glory. It’s our guilty consciences that make God terrifying. Santa Clause we can handle. We line up our kids to be photographed with him. But God? What if he were to make an appearance at the mall? No line would form. We would scatter. God is terrifying to guilty sinners, even though he is in himself gloriously beautiful. But God is pursuing us, even though we avoid him. He himself takes the initiative to break through our terror.” -Ray Ortlund
