How Our Names are Different Than God’s Names

“When Westerners give names, we don’t attach those names to something intrinsic to the person; they serve only as identifiers. My name is Mike, but it could have just as easily been Benjamin or Larry. There is no inherent “Mike-ness” about me that my name reflects. I’m Mike, but that doesn’t tell you anything about me. My parents didn’t lay hands on me and prophesy that I was going to have a “Mike” kind of existence and that is why they named me the way they did. It was just a tag, a way of identifying me that was not attached to anything intrinsic to me or my character.” -Mike Erre, Astonished
