Power in His Blood

“When we come to see that it was no mere man who suffered on Calvary but the Lord of Glory, then we shall be willing to say that one drop of the precious blood of Jesus is of more value, for our own salvation and for the hope of society, than all the rivers of blood that have flowed upon the battlefields of history.” -J. Gresham Machen, Christianity and Liberalism

Summary of Canons of Dordt: Point 2. Rejection of Errors.

dordt

Error 1: That God appointed his Son to die on the cross without any definite plan to save anyone by name, so that his death is completed separated from the individuals who are saved. For Jesus knew who he was dying for (Joh. 10:15, 27).

Error 2: That Jesus did not establish a new covenant by his death, but only acquired the right to do so.

Error 3: That by his death, Christ did not merit salvation for anyone but only gained the right to relate in a new way to someone, should they choose to believe in him.

Error 4: That in the new covenant we are not saved through faith in Christ’s merit, but that faith itself is counted as perfect obedience that graciously deserves the reward of eternal life.

Error 5: That Jesus saved everyone by his death.

Error 6: That Jesus obtained salvation for everyone, but it is only those who by free choice believe that receive the application of salvation. This is Pelagianism in its view of the spiritual ability of sinners.

Error 7: That Christ did not need to die to save humanity.

Summary of Canons of Dordt: Point 2. Articles. “Christ’s Death and Human Redemption Through It”

dordt

Article 1: Because God is just, all sins even ours must be punished.

Article 2: God in his boundless mercy gave his Son to be the satisfaction for our sins.

Article 3: The death of God’s Son is the only complete satisfaction for sins, and it is infinitely valuable, sufficient to atone for the sins of the whole world.

Article 4: Reason it is infinitely valuable is that it is the death of a perfect human being and God’s Son. Further, it has such atoning value because God was pouring our his judicial wrath in it.

Article 5: It is the promise of the Gospel that whoever believes in Christ crucified shall not perish but have eternal life. This promise should be announced “without differentiation or discrimination” to all people.

Article 6: That many do not believe the Gospel promise is not due to any deficiency in the work of Christ, but because they themselves are at fault.

Article 7: But all who believe are able to do so only because of God’s grace–which he owes no one–given to them in Christ from eternity.

Article 8: It was God’s plan that the saving death of his Son should work itself out in all his elect, bringing them to justifying faith and ultimate salvation.

Article 9: This plan arises from God’s eternal love for his chosen ones. As God planned to save a people in the past, accomplishes their redemption, and will save them, so we know there will always be a true church upon the earth.
